With 4K displays currently in full swing and 8K screens set to arrive by approximately 2018, you’d imagine that even high resolutions are some way off.
Well think again. Samsung, along with 13 other companies and education institutions, is working on a new fangled mobile technology capable of displaying images at up to 11K resolutions; that equates to a pixel density of 2250pi.
Consider for a moment that their current mobile phone flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 2560×1440 resolution, and a pixel density of 577ppi.
We’re talking single screen displays by the way. We’re well aware that you can muster up a 12K resolution with the use of three 4K displays, but that’s far from affordable, even downright ludicrous, and in no way viable for mobile devices.
According to ETNews, the primary purpose for developing such a screen is autostereoscopic imaging. That is, the ability to display images in 3D without the need for additional gear.
It would be achieved by the immense detail granted to each colour on such a high resolution screen, allowing for some interesting optical effects, one being glasses-free 3D.
As you might imagine, however, 11K displays will likely require a lot of electrical juice. Think about how demanding current smart device displays are, and now multiply that several times.
Either way, Samsung is hoping to have the technology ready for demonstration by 2018, with no mention of when they expect such a technology to go into production:
We are hoping that we are able to show such technologies at Pyeongchang Olympics if there is a progress in developing technologies. Although some might think that 11K as ‘over specification’ that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this.”
The Pyeongchang Olympics taking place in 2018, of course.
We can’t wait to see what can be done with that sort of a resolution.
We just wonder how relevant 3D technology will be in 2018 plus when augmented and virtual reality are already viable and far superior alternatives. And what about holographic technology?
Whether autostereoscopic 3D is a big deal or not, 11K displays for mobile devices most certainly will be.

Actually 11k or near to would be perfect for the oculus rift. With ridiculous GPU power and displayport 6.3 , we could have lifelike virtual reality. The only bottleneck being your eyes.
