id Software isn’t sold on 3D gaming

5 October 2010

Tim Willets is a development veteran whose career with id Software stretches back to 1995. He has worked on titles such as The Ultimate Doom, Quake I, II, III, and IV, and Doom 3. Currently he is the creative director for id’s upcoming shooter, Rage, which will also introduce the world to their latest 3D engine, id Tech 5.

So, when Willets offers his opinion on something, a lot of people tend to take notes. At the recent Eurogamer expo in London, Willets was on stage to show off some Rage features. His presentation followed an Nvidia 3D Vision demonstration, and Willets was asked what he thinks of 3D stereoscopic gaming.

“The jury’s still out on 3D,” said Willets. He also explained that id Software has not considered bringing Rage to a 3D stereoscopic format. He also made mention of the PlayStation 3 Move and Xbox 360 Kinect. “They’re much better than we expected them to be,” was his comment, but he clarified that id was focusing on creating the best experience for “traditional” controllers.

As for the Rage presentation, Willets showed off three areas named Wellspring, Dam Facility and Dead City. He also shot down the suggestion that Rage’s visuals were inspired by that other post-apocalyptic shooter, Borderlands. “It’s not set on an alien planet, so no, [it’s not] the same,” said Willits.
