Raven Software suffers layoffs

12 October 2010

About forty people have been laid off from Raven Software, according to a report by Kotaku. The developer was behind the recently released Singularity, which received average reviews.

Raven has a long history in the development industry, having formed in 1990, and becoming known for producing top titles utilizing id Software’s 3D engine technologies. They have produced many classic titles such as Heretic, HeXen, Soldier of Fortune, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, and more recently, Quake 4 and Wolfenstein. The developer was acquired by Activision in 1997.

Official comment from Activision follows: “With the recent completion of Singularity, Raven Software is realigning its workforce to better reflect the studio’s upcoming slate.” Activision didn’t provide details on the number of layoffs, but those affected by the decision have indicated that around 40 employees have been let go.

Kotaku reports that their sources have indicated that the layoffs occurred because Raven is going to focus on downloadable content. Raven also suffered layoffs in 2009, and this latest round has reduced the studio to a single development team.
