Mr. Driller inconsiderately welcomes back Chilean miners

18 October 2010

Apparently the fine folks at Namco Bandai were just as captivated with the trapped Chilean miner saga as the rest of the world, and seeing as how the story had a happy ending, Namco Bandai decided to welcome the miners back into the world with a small tribute.

The tribute was a render of their video game character Mr. Driller superimposed over the Chilean flag, along with the phrase “Welcome back.” The picture was posted via the Namco Bandai Twitter account.

Mr. Driller Chile

Mr. Driller, aka Susumu Hori, son of Dig Dug star Taizo Hori, certainly knows a thing or two about digging his way into tough situations.

The Namco Bandai PR department seemingly had a taste of Mr. Driller’s medicine, digging themselves a hole they quickly scrambled to escape from. The company retracted the image over the weekend, saying that it “lacked consideration. “We would like to offer a profound apology to everyone. It was inexcusable,” said Namco Bandai.

Do you think the image of Mr. Driller welcoming the Chilean miners back to the surface was inconsiderate and inexcusable? Have your say on the MyGaming forum.
