Well it’s official, for the US and North America at least; the PS4 (typically $399.99 USD) will now go for $349.99 USD in the US starting October 9th.

This also applies to Canada where the price of the PS4 will be reduced from $449.99 CAD to $429.99 CAD. This was all announced on the PlayStation US Blog.

According to Takealot, the 1TB PS4 is currently retailing for R5, 999. So this price drop should bring this price down quite a bit when we officially get news from PlayStation South Africa.

But this will only happen following the announcement of European pricing, so don’t get all hot and bothered yet.

The news of a price cut isn’t really that much of a surprise since it was announced in Japan at Sony’s Tokyo Game Show press conference in September.

Following this, on the 5th of October, US retailer Target accidentally leaked a price drop of its own.

Shawn Layden, president and CEO of SCEA, had this to say about the price drop:

Our goal at PlayStation has always been to offer the best place to play at a compelling value to gamers. We’re continuing to deliver on that commitment with this new price for PS4, making the console even more accessible to a broader audience this holiday. With highly anticipated games like Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Star Wars Battlefront launching soon and blockbuster exclusives like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End on the horizon, there has never been a better time to join the PS4 community.

All we can say is that we’re super excited to see a price cut for the PS4 happening. But we’re a tad worried about that we may not see the full benefits in South Africa due to high import taxes. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

And you never know, we may score some great prices at rAge this weekend.
