Keiji Inafune leaves Capcom

2 November 2010

Keiji Inafune has thus far had an illustrious history in game development – a career he has pursued under the umbrella of Capcom. At the age of 22, Inafune joined Capcom as an illustrator and the first game he worked on was 1987’s Street Fighter.

He has since gone on to design and contribute to numerous games through the 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit ages of consoles, creating classic titles such as those in the Mega Man and Mega Man X series. He was also involved in numerous successful franchises such as Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and most recently Dead Rising.

Inafune has decided to bring to a close his 23 year Capcom career, which he ended off with the official job title of ‘Head of Research & Development, Consumer Games Research & Development Division and Contents Management Division. Inafune disclosed the reasons for his departure via a blog post (as translated by Kotaku): “A manager’s work means evaluating your subordinates and speaking your dreams. Anyone who can do both of those can be a manager. I thought that when I came here, and I still think that now,” said Inafune.

Apparently Inafune feels that he has reached the top of Capcom: “There’s nowhere higher for me to go. I’m leaving Capcom with the intention of starting my life over. People that really know me, can see where I’m coming from. I’m not a regular dude. It’s probably because I’m strange,” he said.

Capcom clarified the situation by stating: “Mr. Inafune submitted his resignation on Tuesday October 19th. His resignation is effective from the end of November, but given outstanding vacation time he will leave the company at the end of October.”

Inafune will also be leaving his position as CEO of Capcom subsidiary Daletto. He has not indicated what his next move will be.
