The future: Kinect sees you, shows you stuff you want

12 November 2010

According to the Gamasutra, Microsoft’s Xbox chief operating and financial officer Dennis Durkin is selling an Orwellian vision of the future of targeted marketing and advertising to investors. I can’t help but imagine the following statement made in a darkened room, somewhat hazy with cigarette smoke, while the shadow of a huge fan turns lazily on a nearby wall.

“Kinect actually brings an interesting opportunity as it relates to that. Obviously with Kinect, it has facial recognition, voice recognition. We can cater which content we present to you based on who you are,” Durkin says, perhaps adjusting the collar of a black trenchcoat. “How many people are in the room when an ad is shown? How many people are in the room when a game is being played? Those are the kinds of things that, when you add this new sensor into the equation, there’s a bunch of business opportunities that come with that.”

Like monitoring citizens for party loyalty, hygiene standards, and appropriate nutri-ration consumption. It’s like a video game plot come to life or something.

I wonder what sort of ad they’d show if everyone was naked and… busy. Hey, I’m only saying what everybody else is thinking.
