In March eSports debuted on Supersport with the coverage of the IEM World Championship in Poland on the DStv platform.
Supersport said that eSports is the next frontier in international sport, and that it plans to be there every step of the way.
While eSports, which is basically competitive video gaming, is still small in South Africa, it is showing strong growth.
With an established professional league, the country is catching up with global developments, where tournaments with large prize pools are commonplace.

Supersport’s communications manager, Clinton van der Berg said that the response to their eSports coverage was very encouraging, particularly from the gaming community.
“There was a small minority of viewers who complained, claiming that it isn’t “traditional sport”, but the response was overwhelmingly in favour,” said van der Berg.
He said that Supersport is currently busy with investigating the broadcasting of eSports and competitive video gaming in the future.
“Nothing is on the schedule for now, but this may change, depending on the outcome of our research,” said van der Berg.
I think everyone should realise after comparing the latest events from around the country… That the only option is nAvTV.
