Gaming industry prediction soundbite king and general all round analyst guy, Michael Pachter from Wedbush Morgan Securities, has dished the dirt on the prospects for the PSP2 in the latest installment of ‘Pach-Attack!’ on Gametrailers.
Pachter thinks that the handheld gaming market is close to being saturated with the likes of the Nintendo DS and the iPod Touch. As such he thinks that the PSP2 is “going to be dead on arrival.”
He talked about how versatile the iPod Touch is and its appeal for the younger generation of gamers. “It looks to me like young kids are just as happy playing with an iPod Touch or a Nano. The Touch is cool, it plays games, plays music, they’re going to put a camera in it and you’re going to get all kinds of cool stuff,” said Pachter.
He also cited the relatively cheap, sometimes free products available on the app store in comparison to the cost of a similar game on the DS. The difference between Tetris on the iPod Touch and the DS? About US$20. “I really think as the iPod Touch gets more and more powerful, you’re going to see a lot of free games over there,” said Pachter.
He also goes on to suggest that the 3DS might only temporarily boost figures for the handheld market: “After the 3Ds has had its little rush, I think that handhelds are going to continue to decline,” concludes Pachter.
Of course this is only one man’s educated opinion.
