MWEB considering HoN servers

7 December 2010

MyGaming just spoke to the CEO of MWEB ISP, Derek Hershaw, who confirmed that Heroes of Newerth (HoN) developer S2 Games last week approached the ISP inquiring whether they would be interested in hosting local HoN servers.

MWEB is currently evaluating the game’s technical requirements and commercial potential, and more is expected to be revealed in the coming months.

The end of HoN in SA

A few months ago, S2 Games shut down local IS and SAIX HoN servers, leaving iGame as the sole provider of local HoN servers in SA. Then last week, a disagreement between the developer and iGame resulted in the last of the local HoN servers being shut down. This effectively left gamers with no low latency options to play the game, which is less than ideal.

MWEB and gaming

MWEB made a splash on the local gaming scene in October when it announced that they would be bringing dedicated Call of Duty: Black Ops servers to SA. All local Black Ops servers are now hosted on MWEB’s network. Furthermore, MWEB announced that they no longer peer with Telkom, which means that gamers with Telkom ADSL accounts are unable to achieve reasonable latencies when playing on the Black Ops servers.

It also means that MWEB customers are unable to achieve reasonable latencies when playing on SGS servers.

This significantly reduces the options for MWEB users playing online with the likes of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, and Medal of Honor.

If MWEB gets HoN

If MWEB does get exclusive hosting rights for HoN in SA, it will mean that broadband users using Telkom’s network will not be able to play the game with local latencies, giving gamers one more reason to get an IS or MWEB based ADSL account.
