Developer and Microsoft regional director Thomas Nigro recently announced that the VLC media player is being ported to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).

This means that the media player will run on Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox One, Windows 10 IoT, and Hololens.

The VLC for Windows team will also release the last update for Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1, and Windows RT in May. After that, they are dropping support for Windows 8.

A public beta for the Windows 10 Mobile version of VLC will be available next week, with an official release scheduled for early May.

Those interested in VLC for Windows 10 on Xbox One can build the application from source starting next week.

The plan is to launch VLC on Xbox One “this summer” (28 May – 4 September), when Microsoft will allow developers to publish UWP apps on Xbox.
