PC Gamer magazine has declared Ion Storm’s Deus Ex its number one game ever, beating out 99 runners-up in an office poll.
“Deus Ex has a lot of elements to it, but they’re well-chosen,” says section editor Tom Francis. “It’s rare that it’s just you versus some enemies; bot loyalties are flexible, civilians can be on either side, and every evil base seems to have at least one scientist or mechanic waiting to defect.”
The dystopian cyberpunk-styled RPG pulled instant critical and public acclaim on its 2000 launch, and has since become something of a cult legend in the genre. That’s quite an accomplishment for a game whose title doesn’t make any grammatical sense.
A sequel followed in 2003 in the shape of Deus Ex: Invisible War, but failed to reach the same level of popularity. A third game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is due out sometime this year.
Rounding out PC Gamer’s top five are World of Warcraft, Oblivion, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life 2.
