Japanese newspaper Nikkei is reporting that Sony will release the PSP2 with 3G support, making it the”world’s first game machine to connect to the 3G cell phone network.” The reports also claims that the PSP2 will not feature voice support, but that it will ship with a larger OELD (organic electroluminescent display) and touch panel functionality.
No one is really sure where the publication got its information, but it was reported as fact. Sony, meanwhile, has still not even confirmed the existence of the device. Despite the company remaining tight lipped, the paper claims that the PSP2 will be out before the year is over, and that it will be more expensive than the current PSP.
Whilst speculation over the device is at an all time high right now, Sony is expected to make its big reveal later this week at a conference being held in Japan, on January 27. Sony is dubbing the conference a “PlayStation Meeting.” The last time they held a “PlayStation Meeting,” Sony announced the PlayStation 3.
Nikkei also briefly mentions the PlayStation Phone, claiming that it will run Google’s Android operating system.
It is thought that the PSP2 will make use of physical retail platforms, as well as digital downloads to distribute games. The prospect of 3G connectivity is therefore exciting for people living in countries with reasonably priced wireless broadband networks, i.e. not South Africa. Nikkei suggests that 3G will replace the PSP’s WiFi connectivity, which would be problematic for local gamers wanting to download games.
