This is how a single engineer knocked out half the world’s Internet

24 June 2016

The recent internet outage that occurred throughout a large part of Europe was caused by a single person, reports TechforSeed

The outage, which also affected several services like WhatsApp, Facebook, Slack, Reddit and CloudFlare, can be attributed to a single engineer working at Sweden-based web infrastructure company TeliaSonera.

As the downside was affecting a really massive chunk of individuals worldwide, it had been assumed that it was because of some damage or cut in some transatlantic cable.

However, as it turned out, the matter was caused because of an engineer’s very little mistake. Apparently, he misconfigured a vital router and directed all Europe’s web traffic to Hong Kong.

Those who were affected by the outage, including Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, are still unhappy with TeliaSonera, calling the outage “unacceptable”.
