Pokemon Go has obliterated Twitter and is on its way to beat SnapChat and Maps

Pokémon Go is massive. You thought you knew this already, but you really had no idea.

Think I’m exaggerating? Check out these new stats from SurveyMonkey.

The game has only been officially released in a few regions: Australia, New Zealand, the US, Germany, and the UK.

As of yesterday, Pokémon Go attracted just under 21 million daily active users in the United States, SurveyMonkey reported.

The game has surpassed Candy Crush Saga’s rumoured peak US smartphone audience of 20 million, making it the biggest mobile game in US history.

Massive growth

Since its launch, the growth of Pokémon Go has been astronomical, surpassing Tinder’s number of daily active users on Android within a few days, and leaving Twitter in the dust.

If it maintains its growth trajectory, it may even overtake SnapChat and Google Maps, SurveyMonkey said.

Huge initial player influx does not equal financial success

SurveyMonkey cautioned that although Nintendo’s share price might suggest otherwise, it is too early to declare Pokémon Go a financial victory for the business.

Nintendo owns a minority stake in Pokémon Go developer Niantic through various vehicles, and SurveyMonkey said it will pocket just a small slice of the game’s profits.

It also noted that games that generate tremendous hype don’t always turn into a sustainable success.

“Back in 2012, Draw Something consumed the public consciousness for a few weeks before its user numbers dropped like a stone,” SurveyMonkey said.

“Nintendo’s last mobile game, Miitomo, met a similar fate, finding early success that was ultimately unsustainable.”
