Activision killed the video game rock star. According to Kotaku, the publisher has closed its Guitar Hero franchise, and dumped True Crime: Hong Kong after previously pushing its launch from 2010 forward to sometime this year.
An official statement from the publisher says that, “due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011. The company also will stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong. These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.”
Rumour also has it that just about everybody at DJ Hero dev Freestyle Games has been sent packing.
Actually, it’s probably about time Guitar Hero was binned. The franchise has been choking to death on its own vomit since Guitar Hero III.
