Proving that, somewhat contrary to popular misconception, the internet really is serious business, a teenager has been arrested and charged in Maryland, US for hijacking some kid’s Xbox LIVE Gamertag and issuing death threats to everybody on his friend list.
Apparently the unnamed perp got hold of the account’s login details via some sort of transaction on a “third party website”.
“After obtaining this user name and password the Maryland teenager sent a message to nearly 100 people, including students at Berkeley Heights High School pretending to be the user,” said local prosecutor, Theodore J. Romankow. The message claimed he’d bring a gun to school the next day, and play Counter-Strike IRL.
Someone called the rozzers, and after the account holder denied sending the message, the real sender was tracked down to a location in Maryland and promptly taught an important life lesson about consequences. Sensible people everywhere were quoted as saying, “Lol, what a noob.”
