MyGaming’s sister publication, MyBroadband recently conducted an online piracy survey. It was completed by 5,230 broadband users in South Africa, who represent tech savvy consumers with a good knowledge of the Internet and broadband services.

Results showed showed that ADSL and WISP connections are the most popular among South African online pirates. The results further showed that Afrihost’s uncapped users had the highest piracy percentage.

The survey also revealed that 58% of respondents have pirated content over the last 12 months, and 28% of respondents have pirated video games.

Most popular broadband connection among online pirates

The survey results showed that fixed broadband connections – WISP access, ADSL, and fibre – had the highest number of online pirates.

Mobile broadband connections had the lowest ratio of Internet pirates. This is to be expected considering the high data costs associated with these connections.

The following list shows the percentage of users of different broadband connections in South Africa who pirated content online over the last 12 months.

  • WISP – 82%
  • ADSL 4Mbps – 73%
  • ADSL 2Mbps – 72%
  • VDSL 20Mbps and 40Mbps – 69%
  • Neotel fibre – 67%
  • ADSL 1Mbps – 65%
  • ADSL 10Mbps – 62%

  • Cell C 3G and LTE – 41%
  • Neotel CDMA – 39%
  • MTN 3G and LTE – 32%
