Ookla’s latest Net Index statistics show that Bryanston is the top broadband suburb in South Africa with an average broadband download speed of 18.49Mbps.
The Net Index website, which uses data from millions of recent test results from Speedtest.net, shows that the average download speed in South Africa is 5.6Mbps.
While South Africa’s average download speed is increasing all the time, it is still well below the global average of 18.6Mbps.
South Africa’s average upload speed of 2.7Mbps is also far slower than the global average of 8.3Mbps.
Top broadband cities and suburbs in South Africa
According to Ookla’s Net Index statistics Bryanston has the highest average download speed at 18.49Mbps, followed by Rustenburg on 12.37Mbps, and Secunda on 8.43Mbps.

Top mobile broadband areas in South Africa
The Net Index website shows that South Africa’s average mobile broadband download speed is 6.9Mbps, slightly lower than the global average of 8Mbps.
South Africa’s mobile upload speed of 2.4Mbps is also lower than the global average of 2.9Mbps.
According to Net Index, the top mobile broadband speeds are available in Sandton, Midrand and Centurion.
