MWEB launched South Africa’s first affordable uncapped ADSL services in March 2009, with prices starting at R219 per month for a 384kbps service.
Over the years the price of local and international bandwidth and Telkom’s IPC service – which is needed to provide ADSL products – declined significantly.
These wholesale price reductions filtered through to retail tariffs, and users can currently get a 2Mbps uncapped service for less than the price of a 384kbps service in 2009.
DSL line speeds have also increased significantly since the early days of uncapped ADSL, which produces more scale for Internet Service Providers and, therefore, better wholesale rates.
