Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi has announced the launch of the province’s paperless classroom project, with promises of “world-class broadband” for the schools involved.
Lesufi was speaking during an event held on Tuesday, 13 January 2015, at Boitumelong Secondary School in Tembisa, where a Wi-Fi network had been deployed in support of the project.
To get an idea of what the promised “world-class” broadband connection would be like, we conducted a few speed tests from both a mobile device and notebook computer.
The smartphone Speedtest.net result was astonishing, suggesting that Boitumelong Secondary has access to a symmetrical 90 Megabit per second (Mbps) fibre connection, running on the Seacom-AS network.

Further testing suggested that staff and students at the school may not have access to this full bandwidth all the time.
Local and international speed tests conducted later from a different device showed that download speeds capped at exactly 15Mbps, while upload speeds came back at exactly 0.5Mbps.

This is good news, now I hope they push it forward and use it for the kids education. I also hope it and the computers are in a secure enough location as all hardware will be stolen in the future. I kinda know, have helped two schools last year at my previous company with refurbished PC because theirs was stolen.
Kids are in dire need of proper education, they are the future and if this country wants move forward, they have to look at the children today.
