New technology recently installed on the International Space Station is designed to form the basis of an internet-style network spanning the whole (or most) of our cosmic neighborhood, reports Futurism.
DTN (Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking) provides a reliable and automatic “store and forward” network that only transmits when all of the partial data bundles can be received and re-bundled at the final destination.
This technology could not only benefit those living on earth, but spacecraft in deep space and possibly even manned colonies.
Its first and most practical use however, will be to improve mobile networks.
“Our experience with DTN on the space station leads to additional terrestrial applications especially for mobile communications in which connections may be erratic and discontinuous,” said Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, a visiting scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory working on the DTN.
