We’ll give you 5G if you relax net neutrality: EU telecoms operators

European operators have issued a manifesto to the European Commission, stating that they will bring 5G to Europe only if the new net neutrality rules are watered down, reports The Financial Times.

The rules prevent unfair blocking and connection-speed throttling, and the paid prioritisation of Web traffic.

Over 17 operators including BT, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, and Vodafone presented the manifesto, stating that they would bring 5G to every European country by 2020.

Operators are still allowed to provide so-called ‘specialised services’ like Internet TV and critical communications, provided it does not degrade the performance of the public Internet.

“The telecom industry warns that the current Net Neutrality guidelines create significant uncertainties around 5G return on investment,” reads the manifesto.

“Investments are therefore likely to be delayed unless regulators take a positive stance on innovation and stick to it.”
