150 millionth PlayStation 2 sold

Sony has announced on Twitter that it has officially sold 150 million PlayStation 2 consoles around the world. 

The PlayStation 2 was officially announced in 1999, and released in Europe and North America in 2000, which makes it just over 10 years old. Although the console’s lifespan was previously planned to span ten years, Sony has stated that it will continue to sell the console for as long as user demand persists. 

According to the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2009, the top selling PS2 game to date is  Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which has shifted a hefty 17.33 million units. 

Sony announced in November 2009 that it had sold 147.6 million PS2s, which means 2.4 million units were sold in the last two months
