Rumour control: Mirror’s Edge 2 cancelled?

15 February 2011

According to a report on Swedish gaming site Press 2 Play, Mirror’s Edge 2 has been cancelled. The article is actually dated from late last year, but the news is only breaking here now for some reason, probably mostly because it’s all in Scanwegian and translation is such an effort.

“[Patrick Söderlund, EA senior vice president] acknowledges that Mirror’s Edge didn’t meet sales expectations, which has held back development of a sequel. EA was shown a prototype, but declined with misgivings. The project did not go ahead, and DICE’s devs are working on something else instead.”

Since the English-speaking press starting pushing the story around yesterday evening, EA has dropped an official statement over at Joystiq, saying that, “Mirror’s Edge is an important franchise built by the DICE studio in Stockholm. DICE is currently producing Battlefield 3. Nothing further to announce.”

So yes, no, maybe. Apparently EA would sooner jump off a building than commit to this sequel one way or the other.
