Google has received a $6.75 million anti-trust fine in Russia for requiring phone manufacturers to pre-install its apps on Android mobile devices, reports The Verge.
The same lawsuit is currently ongoing in the EU, “accusing the company of abusing its dominant position in the market by forcing manufacturers to preinstall its services on Android devices”.
The result may not go the same way in Europe, as popular search engine Yandex was the main driving force for the suit in Russia.
The claims don’t stop there however, as Russia’s antitrust watchdog, the FSA, already has its next target, and has opened up a new investigation into claims that Apple is involved in price-fixing for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
It will be interesting to see if this sparks a wave of similar suits in other countries or whether the reason they were successful at all is because of Russia’s harsher competition laws.
