Local online retailer, Kalahari.net, has released its bestseller lists for January. This list includes the site’s top selling books, music, DVDs, Ebooks and electronics.
These were Kalahari’s top five selling games for the month:
1. Little Big Planet 2 Collector’s Edition (PS3)
2. Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)
3. Little Big Planet 2 (PS3)
4. Dead Space 2 (PS3)
5. Mass Effect 2 (PS3)
This is a remarkably strong showing for the PS3 in South Africa, although in fairness, Mass Effect 2 was finally released on Sony’s console this month, as was the PS3 exclusive Little Big Planet 2.
What was surprising was that both editions of Little Big Planet 2 each outsold Dead Space 2, with only the PS3 version of EA’s action-horror sequel making the top 5.
Recent comments from industry insiders corroborate this trend, suggesting that the PS3 is gaining significant traction in our market. The key catalyst to the console’s growth in SA seems to have been the introduction of the PS3 Slim at a lower price point than it sold for previously. A legacy of unreliable hardware has also damaged the Xbox 360’s reputation in SA, and key retailers have told MyGaming that they believe this has lead to an increase in PS3 sales in the last 18 months.
