SAVE YOURSELVES! Minecraft coming to iPhone, iPad

22 February 2011

Minecraft dev Marcus “Notch” Persson has told Gamasutra that the blockbuster game is shipping to iPhone and iPad sometime this year. Next stop, neural implants.

Persson added that the iOS version won’t be getting the same updates as the original browser game, but only those that “makes sense” for touchscreen devices. Which makes sense too. A number of unofficial ports are currently available on both platforms.

Since launching back in 2009, the sandbox game has established itself as something of a cult phenomenon, pushing a million sales as of January this year, and claiming some five million or so registered accounts across premium and free versions. Not bad, considering it’s still, you know, in beta and everything. A full PC version is also expected to launch later this year.

Minecraft is currently in the running for the IGF’s Seamus McNally Grand Prize, alongside the locally-developed roguelike, Desktop Dungeons. MAY THE BEST TIME-WASTER WIN!
