Rumour control: hack-proof PS3 SKU in development

23 February 2011

Okay, this might just be about the most disreputable rumour in the history of rumours, but a website you’ve probably never heard of is reporting that according to their – ahem – “anonymous source”, Sony is developing a “hack-proof PS3 SKU”.

It’s supposedly set to ship with a 300GB HDD, and priced at £186.99 in the UK (around R2000 or so). The article also claims that older models will see a price drop when this launches.

While there’s obviously no such thing as a “hack-proof” anything, it’s not at all unlikely that – recent events considered – Sony is working on a new PS3 model that’s at least secured against current exploits. Presumably, it comes with a gigantic titanium padlock strapped to its secret bits, charged with a 10000-volt payload.

Unless Sony plans to brick all those old, compromised PS3s, however, they must also have something in the works to stop those gaps in their system security. The saga is ongoing.
