We recently got a chance to catch up with Openweb founder Keoma Wright, and asked him a couple of questions regarding his ISP’s experience with online gaming in SA.
When asked about whether Openweb views gamers as an important audience, he pointed us to the company’s Gold Uncapped product which is targeted directly at gamers. “This class of product offers the lowest latencies, and most consistent connection in order to aid gamers in their winning strategies,” said Wright.
According to Wright, 12% of the ISP’s daily traffic is gaming related. He could not specify how much of this traffic was driven by game related downloads, and how much was due to actual online gaming, however, he did confirm that PC gaming is the largest contributor to this usage.
PC gaming continues to grow in SA, while reports indicate that the PS3 install base is also expanding. Local distributors and retailers have suggested that Xbox 360 software sales are declining, which many attribute to the console’s RROD legacy. In Kalahari.net’s last sales report, its top five selling games for the month were PS3 game. However, if OpenWeb’s bandwidth usage statistics are anything to go by, the console’s broader install base is still sticking to single player gaming for now.
