How South African ISPs actually deal with piracy notifications

We have all heard the stories surrounding piracy notifications.

Pirates download the latest movie or TV show and suddenly the full brunt of the law is breathing down their necks.

All of these stories seem to take place overseas however (specifically in the USA and UK) – what are the chances something similar will happen in South Africa?

We asked Laurie Fialkov of CyberSmart how many piracy notifications South African ISPs receive each week and how they typically respond to them.

“We tend to receive a couple of piracy notifications every week.”

“We pass on the notice to the customer but that’s about it. We are not the piracy police, and if a big media company wants to go after our client they must do so themselves.”

“We will give them customer details in terms of Proatia if served the proper legal documents. If we get a valid take down notice we obviously comply immediately.”
