Valve announces new Steam Guard security service

4 March 2011

Are you one of those people that just can’t seem to resist handing over your Steam account details to friendly people claiming they’ll hook you up with every game ever? Well, you’ll be pleased to know Valve is introducing a new security layer to Steam and Steamworks, restricting important account management options to a single PC.

With Steam Guard, attempts to log in, modify, or alter account details on an unauthorised PC will alert the user for approval.

The service will apparently require newer, second generation Intel CoreT and Intel CoreT vProT processors, as it works with some newfangled Intel Indentity Protection Technology . According to the press stuff, “IPT generates a new numerical password every 30 seconds, integrating into the processor functionality that previously required a separate card or key fob.”

“Account phishing and hijacking are our #1 support issues,” says Valve prez, Gabe Newell. “With Intel’s IPT and Steam Guard, we’ve taken a big step towards giving customers the account security they need as they purchase more and more digital goods.”
