Bulletstorm “rapestorm” controversy good for the game, bad for the industry

9 March 2011

A quick recap, first – Fox News declared Bulletstorm the “worst game in the world”, Carole Lieberman claimed games are responsible for an increase in sexual violence, and a bunch of angry stuff was said.

Asked about the storm-in-a-teacup controversy in a recent interview with Industry Gamers, Epic’s Mike Capps says it was probably good for the game’s marketing, but bad for the industry.

“For what it did for Bulletstorm… yes, there were people who were very excited about any attention at all,” he explains. “For a game that’s over-the-top, they probably helped sell more units than they convinced people to pick at us. What was most exciting about it for me [was the reaction from the media in the industry defending us]. Every journalist said this Fox report is junk… It’s wonderful to see a media that’s defending free speech.”

“As for what it does for the industry as a whole I think it’s terrible,” he noted. “There are people who really respect Fox News’ opinions and look at that and are [convinced that video games are bad].”

On the other hand, people who really respect Fox News’ opinions don’t play video games, anyway. There’s not much electricity in those emergency bomb shelters, where they’re waiting for the commies to attack.
