Ubisoft ordered to pull “misleading” We Dare ad from the internet

So, a week or so back, Ubisoft put out a somewhat suggestive ad for a seemingly somewhat suggestive Wii game – We Dare – which promptly prompted a bit of a controversy over its 12-and-up rating.

The ad had two adult couples engaging in the sort of behaviour everybody likes to pretend 12 year olds don’t also engage in, which obviously upset people.

Anyway, it now turns out the game has nothing much at all to do with the ad. Surely, such a thing has never before happened.
“The Committee concludes that the advertisement does NOT accurately reflect the nature and content of the product and it MISLEADS consumers as to its true nature,” ratings board PEGI says in a statement over on Eurogamer. “Consequently, the Committee considers imperative as a first measure that the advertisement for the game which was made available online should be taken down immediately. If this is not done within three working days of this decision this Committee will consider further immediate sanctions against the publisher.”

Additionally, PEGI says that “It was correct to give the game a 12 rating. The content of the game and the interaction that the game itself implies do not warrant a higher rating. Marketing may have implied something else, but PEGI does not rate advertising, it rates game content. If people play the game, they will see that there is nothing inappropriate for ages 12 and older.”

Ubisoft has complied with the order, and made the offending ad unavailable on its official site.
