Forget PC gaming dying – it’s SO last week. Now Angry Birds dev Peter Vesterbacka has declared it’s now console gaming on its way out. Next week, “Board games are dying”.
Speaking on a panel at the annual SXSW music, film, and interactive conference in Austin, Texas, Vesterbacka claimed that innovation has moved into the mobile and social platforms, simply because it’s easier to produce content more quickly. He added that as the mobile gaming sector expands, console gaming is dying off.
“Tablets are killing consoles,” he said. “Four generations of new tablets come before a new console, if one ever comes.”
That’s not stopping his company, Rovio, from launching Angry Birds on PSN and XBLA, anyway.
Vesterbacka also confirmed that the game has recently passed 100 million downloads, with some 40 million active players monthly across all platforms, clocking an average of around 200 million minutes each day catapulting disgruntled cartoon birds at stuff.
