BAFTA fellow and venerated game designer Peter Molyneux has admitted to making stuff up to keep journalists entertained.
While accepting his BAFTA fellowship at the ceremony yesterday evening, Molyneux said “I’d like to thank the press, by the way, for listening to my stuff. Sorry, I’ve slightly over-promised on things on occasion.”
“I could name at least 10 features in games that I’ve made up to stop journalists going to sleep and I really apologise to the team for that,” Said Molyneux. “Every day I wake up and thank the stars that I’m still here now. I love my job so much and I really feel like going home and working harder than I’ve ever done to prove that I deserve this award.”
Peter Molyneux received a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2011 Game Developers Conference and now BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) has honoured the man with a ‘Fellowship’ during their gaming awards ceremony.
Molyneux is the creative force behind some of the gaming industry’s iconic titles, including Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park, and Fable. Molyneux co-founded Bullfrog Productions in 1987 and created a new genre of computer games known as “the God game” with the release of Populous. Since then he has been responsible for a string of popular and experimental gaming titles including Powermonger, Theme Park, Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White and the Fable series. Cumulative sales of his games are at approximately fifteen million worldwide.
