PS3 hacker flees to South America [LOL]

24 March 2011

While Sony’s been scrolling through PS3 hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz’s PayPal records, it turns out the guy’s skipped the country and is hanging out, sipping mai tais with Nazi war criminals in the jungle (maybe) somewhere in South America.

Not that he’s on the run or anything – a poster on PSX-Scene rushed in to assure everybody he’s “just on vacation”. And not one funded by donations, either. Surely. His widely-advertised financial troubles were exclusively confined to a shortage in his special litigation savings account.

According to a recent court filing by Sony’s goon squad, “Most seriously, after Magistrate Judge Spero ordered an inspection of Hotz’s devices and ordered Hotz to appear at a deposition in California, SCEA learned that Hotz had deliberately removed integral components of his impounded hard drives prior to delivering them to a third party neutral and that Hotz is now in South America, an excuse for why he will not immediately provide the components of his hard drives as requested by the neutral.”

Apparently he might also have fibbed about not owning any PSN accounts. Sony’s inspection of his console turned up a PSN account registered in the name “blickmanic”, an alias Hotz had used previously in the hacking scene.

What’s your take on Geohot? Noble man of the people, or nefarious hacker responsible for damaging the PS3 community? << Share your views in the forums
