No, you won’t believe what the top-grossing game in America since 1995 turns out to be

25 March 2011

Market research company NPD has been doing what market research company NPD does – tabulating sales data. Most recently, they’ve been tabulating gross game sales data in North America since 1995, and the winner, coming in at life-to-date sales of $830.90 million is – wait for it, waaaaait for it – Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Not Guitar Hero II (which was the best one), not Guitar Hero: World Tour (which was probably the most expensive), but the bland, almost instantly forgotten Guitar Hero III. Although it did have Cliffs of Dover, which was obviously all kinds of rad.

Black Ops made second place.

The report did not, however, include sales information from downloadable platforms, nor inflation-adjusted or bundled software. In this last case, the Wii-bundled Wii Sports would have dominated the entire list, with some 75.66 million units sold and more cash printed than you could count, according to latest figures.
