Facebook is strengthening its policies and tools to better fight hate ads and prevent hateful terms being offered as ad targeting options.

The announcement follows a report by ProPublica about Facebook enabling advertisers to target groups with terms like “Jew hater”.

Last week, Facebook temporarily disabled certain ads tools as slurs and offensive language could be used as targeting criteria.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said the social media platform will:

  1. Clarify their advertising policies and tighten their enforcement processes to ensure content that breaches community standards cannot be used to target ads.
  2. Add more human review and oversight to automated processes.
  3. Encourage people on Facebook to report potential abuses of its ads system.

“We hope these changes will prevent abuses like this going forward,” said Sandberg.
