LEGO and Epic Games to partner on child-safe metaverse project

8 April 2022

Yesterday, Epic Games announced its long-term partnership with The LEGO Group to start a metaverse project aimed at kids.

The partnership aims “to shape the future of the metaverse to make it safe and fun for children and families.”

“The family-friendly digital experience will give kids access to tools that will empower them to become confident creators and deliver amazing play opportunities in a safe and positive space, ” according to the announcement.

CEO of The LEGO Group Niels Christiansen said that while there is a lot of potential for children to use this digital space in the metaverse to develop lifelong skills like creativity, collaboration and communication, it is also essential to make this space safe and beneficial to its users.

The two companies will therefore use the following three principles to ensure that children and families can engage safely in play opportunities via its new digital experience:

  • Protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority.
  • Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first.
  • Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

LEGO already has many family-friendly video games aimed at younger audiences, like the recently-released LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and the upcoming LEGO Bricktales.

However, even though this new metaverse project’s exact nature is still unknown, it seems that it will focus primarily on supporting children’s creativity, much like Dreams or Roblox.
