EA Blames Steam

28 July 2011

Following yesterday’s news that Dragon Age 2 had become the latest victim in a series of mysterious disappearances from Steam, EA has blamed the service’s “restrictive terms” for its removal.

“At EA, we offer our games and content to all major download services including GameStop, Amazon, Direct2Drive and Steam,” the publisher’s SVP of global e-commerce David DeMartini tells IGN.

“Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to sell downloadable content. No other download service has adopted this practice. Consequently some of our games have been removed by Steam.”

Quite what those limits are remains unconfirmed for the moment, although speculation has it that the Dragon Age 2’s in-game DLC portal is the real problem.

Crysis 2 was also recently yanked from Steam, and a few weeks back, EA snubbed Valve’s service when announcing digital platforms for its incoming Battlefield 3 launch.

“We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam,” adds DeMartini.
