Dragon Age 2 removed from Steam

27 July 2011

EA caused a ruckus a few weeks back when it removed Crysis 2 from Steam. Now, Dragon Age 2 has gone missing from the world’s biggest digital distributor’s game catalogue.

No official reason has been given yet, although the removal coincidentally coincides with the release of the first Dragon Age 2 DLC pack.

The overwhelming assumption when Crysis 2 was pulled from Steam, was that EA was trying to promote its own digital distribution platform;  Origin. However, as it turned out, the official reason given was that EA wants its PC games to be able to connect directly to its own servers for updates, patches, and new content. There is no concession for this on Steam, as all games purchased on Steam connect to the Steam servers for updates.

With the Dragon Age 2 Legacy DLC now available for 800 BioWare Points on PC, it seems likely at this stage that the reason for the game disappearing from Steam is similar to that which caused Crysis 2 to be removed.
