Diablo 3 has over 2.8 trillion character builds

22 October 2011

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to build an axe-wielding battle Sorceress in your RPGs, Diablo 3 should be just to your taste.

Jay Wilson, game director of Diablo 3, has been talking at Blizzcon about the various ways in which one can build a character in Diablo 3. According to Wilson, the game allows for “in the area of something like 2.8 trillion” builds, when one factors in each character’s skill tree, passive abilities and item combinations.

While you may think this sounds a bit like trumped up marketing, after all anyone can throw a crossbow on a Witchdoctor, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be good – well that’s where you’re wrong. Throughout the design of Diablo 3, the team has focused on maximizing the amount of viable builds, as opposed to a few optimal ones.

This means that even at the highest difficulty level, there are a number of totally out-there builds that you can actually be successful with. While there are no doubt builds that are more powerful than others, there are tons of very unusual ones which are perfectly reasonable. Wilson admits that many will always be drawn to the most powerful combinations, but the options are there for people to experiment.

As a demonstration, Wilson showed some videos of unusual combinations in action. One of them shows a “combat wizard” using special tactics to face a spider nest head on, while another shows a Witchdoctor running around solo on the Hell difficulty.

These complex builds are helped by the addition of new NPCs that can upgrade your items with specific augmentations that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

I know I can’t wait to tear a hole in Diablo’s face with a scrawny Witchdoctor wielding a battleaxe three times his body weight. What build will you choose?
