I admit it – back when Need For Speed: The Run was first revealed earlier this year, I was skeptical, to say the very least.
I mean, who wasn’t? It’s Need For Speed – it’s supposed to be about cars, and driving really fast; and the idea of clambering out your vehicle to leg it through quick-time action sequences… just seems off.
After all, we all remember what happened to a certain John Tanner when he decided to step outside of his vehicle comfort-zone.

But there’s just something about the new trailer released for The Run that set off a little glimmer excitement, barrelling through the jaded cynicism in the pit of my stomach.
It’s not the first time EA have put a plot and character into their games, either – the Underground series put you, as the faceless racer, on point – breaking through ham-fisted acting and over-stylized cut-scenes involving familiar real-world faces and Brooke Burke’s chest.
This time we’re dealing with an actual, named character though – as the game is driven by a proper, linear plot covering real-life cities across the states – so we’ll have to see how this goes off.
If last year’s Hot Pursuit reboot is anything to go by, the driving will be solid, gratifying and loads of fun – so at the very least there’s that.
I remain tentatively hopeful that adding a new spin on things will push NFS across the finish-line – and not leave it a burning wreck on the side of the freeway.
Need For Speed: The Run is expected to be smashing into SA on 18 November 2011
