The 3DS has had a rough year, but has managed to finish 2011 strong with a record-breaking sales month for December in Japan, one of the biggest handheld markets in the world. This new life comes after the controversial decision to slash the 3DS’ price, and it worked. Surprise, surprise, people like things much more when they’re cheap.
New data released by Enterbrain shows that the 3DS sold a very impressive 1,492,931 units last month, the highest single month total ever recorded by Enterbrain, who have been tracking sales since 1997.
This marks a strong finish to a pattern of steady growth over the last seven months, topping the Japan monthly charts consistently since the price slash. The success isn’t confined to Asia however, as the handheld also recently broke the four million mark in the US.
Bringing up 2nd place for December was the Playstation Vita, selling a tidy 402,794 units in its first fortnight.
