We’ve already given plenty of coverage to AMD’s latest and greatest flagship performance graphics card, the HD7970, but in many ways, the less powerful and less expensive HD7950 is a lot more important.
Mostly because far more people will be able to afford the card, and we can expect it to pack an impressive punch.
Today a screenshot has emerged, taken from GPU-Z taken by DonanimHaber. The screenshot reveals the core specifications of the new HD7950 graphics card.
According to the screenshot, the HD7950 will use AMD’s 28nm “Tahiti” GPU and will pack 28 Graphics Core Next (GCN) compute units. In comparison, the HD7970 will feature 32.
The HD7950 will ship with 1,792 stream processor and 11 Texture Mapping Units, and mirrors the HD7970 with 32 ROPs. The card will boast 3GB of GDDR5 and use the same 384-bit memory bus as the HD7970.
The clock speed on the memory has been reduced to an effective 5GHz, making for an ultimate memory bandwidth thoroughput of 240GB/s.
According to the screenshot, the core will be clocked at 880MHz, which is significantly higher than previous guesses which put it at around 800MHz. The screenshot in question may however be from an overclocked HD7950, so we can’t be sure of the clock speed.
Of course, these specs should not be taken as official. However, if they are accurate then we can expect the HD7950 to deliver performance that is not too far behind the HD 7970. It also remains to be seen how AMD prices the new card.
