If you were thinking of buying a PS Vita next week and play PS2 and PS3 games downloaded from the PlayStation Network, think of something else instead. Sony has confirmed that, for the moment, they’re not planning on supporting anything like that.
In a PS Vita FAQ posted on the PlayStation blog ahead of the PS Vita’s launch on 22 February, Sony clarifies that “Users can play supported digital PSP titles and supported minis. In regard to PSone classics titles, we will announce further details when they are ready. PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.”
Okay, the PS Vita not being able to play PS3 games isn’t exactly a shocker – it already has the cross-play feature, so that’s where it’s at.
But PS2 games? The PS Vita is about 9000 times more powerful than the PS2, which makes the decision not to port games over a bit of a missed opportunity. Or maybe just a good reason to keep selling other Sony consoles.
