Magic: The Gathering creator puts mobile game project on Kickstarter

Everyone is getting in on the Kickstarter gold rush; one of the latest interesting projects to show up is a new mobile game designed by the creator of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, Richard Garfield.

The Kickstarter ends on May 5^th and is aiming to raise $40,000 – it’s currently about a quarter of the way there with $10,000. The free-to-play game goes by the name Map Monsters, a location-based adventure which will release initially on iOS with a port to Android at a later time.

The game will involve capturing various monsters that can be found in different areas. To create the game, Garfield is collaborating with an independent US studio called BodSix which specializes in this type of game. The team are no slouches, including veterans from Apple, Pixar, Amazon and Wizards of the Coast (the company that produces Magic: The Gathering).

Rewards for Kickstarter pledges include virtual goods, signed posters, Map Monsters shirt and a “game night” with Garfield.

This wouldn’t be Garfield’s first video game project, he’s also helped design games such as Schizoid, Mind Twist and Kard Combat.
