The new Nintendo 3DS XL doesn’t just feature a bigger screen –its better too. According to Nintendo, the XL is sporting the least reflective handheld screen Nintendo’s ever produced, courtesy of an additional anti-glare treatment.

“On a LCD screen there are basically three reflective layers, which all of them reflects and cause glare. So this time, we specially treated all the layers. Reflectivity on the Nintendo 3DS was about 12%, but we decreased that to about 3%,” Nintendo’s Takeshi Murakami explained.

Despite having been available for year, anti-glare technology hadn’t been used until now due to the high cost – but more efficient manufacturing processes have brought the expense down to an acceptable level.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, “Anti-reflection has been a topic every time since the Game Boy Advance system, but most of the time we had to give it up because of the cost.”

Muramaki added, “The time finally came! When it comes to anti-reflection, this device beats all previous Nintendo game systems.”
