Black Ops Declassified devs had no development help from Treyarch

8 September 2012

Call of Duty’s PS Vita offering, Declassified, hasn’t been touched by either of its two major Call of Duty developers, Treyarch and Infinity Ward.

John Rafacz, communications manager over at Treyarch, has said that “we have not been involved with the Vita version.”

Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified is being developed by independent California studio Nihilistic, who haven’t been receiving help from Activision’s key developers. Sony has given the game a lot of press, but the relative silence from Activision has led people to speculate that perhaps Activision was licensing the brand to Sony instead of publishing the game themselves.

Activision has made a statement to clear this up, saying, “Activision is the publisher, but we also have a partnership with Sony to bundle Declassified with the PlayStation Vita.”

They also added that while Treyarch hasn’t been involved in game development, Treyarch was “consulted to ensure accuracies within the fiction”. This was necessary since the Declassified story is set in the time space between Black Ops 1 and 2.
